SCOTT ANDERSON

“As you become more fearless, fear itself loses its grip on you. You cultivate immunity against anxiety and doubt because you are no longer constricted by fear’s energy. Creativity can then flow through you, offering skillful ideas, solutions, and possibilities.” Michael Beckwith   --Life Liftoff Cards

When I started teaching, I had a student named Scott who had cerebral palsy. He was born with it, and his parents put him up for adoption. A very wonderful family adopted him, and by the time he arrived at the high school I taught at, he had developed an optimistic view of life.  He never thought of himself as having a disability, and he never let anything get in the way of doing something he wanted to do. He was in my drama class located up a steep flight of stairs.  The climb was a huge task. Other students would fight over who got to carry his wheelchair up the steps, and he would navigate the stairs at his own pace, holding on to the guard rail as he climbed. He could walk, but he fatigued easily, so he had his own red wheelchair to ride around in. He was on the track team and was in my drama class and participated on the speech team.  Nothing held him back.

One day, shortly after we produced an Agatha Christie play, The Hollow, another teacher asked me how I thought of casting Scott in a play? I said, well, he tried out, he read very well, and I cast him, just like everyone else who gets cast in a play. The point is, that Scott never thought he couldn’t do something he wanted to do. A great lesson for all of us!

Scott’s adoptive family were very supportive of him. They had a deep faith in God and passed it on to him. Scott is now a pastor himself.

“Life is like a dance, with magic showing up when you trust where life will lead you; when you truly believe God is good, and you know you are supported by Spirit.” Sandra Lindsey Smith   --Life’s Garden of Weekly Wisdom

Do you celebrate the optimistic people in your life? Does it feed your own positivity, and do you play it forward?

Love and light,

Sandy Smith
