ENJOYING LIFE

"The last of human freedoms--to chose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to chose one's own way."             --Victor Frankl

What does enjoying life mean to you? For me, it means really connecting to what is happening in the world around me, and that always starts with what is happening in the nature that surrounds my community. If I wake up feeling gloomy, I like to put on some comfortable shoes, and explore the community around me. I walk a mile or two and absorb the beauty of the nature that surrounds me. Blooming flowers, Canadian geese flying overhead, neighbors walking their dogs, a crack in the sidewalk with a tiny flower poking its way through the cement, the clean crisp air that blows gently around me -- all are simple things that awaken my senses. Each morning I have a cup of coffee, and if it is a clear day, I sit outside and journal. This routine prepares me to truly enjoy what life has to offer for the day. When I feed my soul first, it prepares me to respond to what life has to offer for the day.

Life may have its ups and downs, and centering yourself allows time to lovingly face whatever may unfold during the day. Life can be hectic, money may be tight, family or friends may try your patience, enjoying life may seem unattainable, and that might be the time to find a person to share your feelings with.

In 1997 I was going through a divorce, and teaching high school. My teacher friends would ask me how I was doing, and I would respond with a flat, "fine". Finally, I found Center for Spiritual Living in Bonita, California, and started attending. I found a faith tradition that allowed me to look at life in a more positive way. I started enjoying life, and enjoyed learning a new way of looking at the world.

"If you don't move your body, your brain thinks your dead. Movement of your body will not only clear out the 'sludge' but also give you more energy."    --Sylvia Brown

Work on yourself first. Enjoy the beauty and wonder around you. If you need some help, ask a trusted friend or family member. Sharing a problem lightens the load and allows more of life for youto enjoy.

Love, light, and joy,

Rev Sandy Smith
